MISSION STATEMENT
To provide continued education of sound horticultural practice for our members, and to promote the professionalism of the Nursery and Landscape Industry
COMMUNITY SERVICE & EDUCATION
Arbor Day and Earth Day: Each year the CNYSNLA (Central New York State Nursery & Landscape Association) participates in programs celebrating these two days around our region. Many of our members are involved as part of our group or individually, and they provide plantings or educational programs at school, churches, town or village centers and for charitable groups.
We were involved as a group last year at:
The Onondaga County Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s “Party for the Planet” for Earth Day
Onondaga Lake Park for Arbor Day
Jordan Elbridge High School for Arbor Day
Scholarships: We offer two $1500 scholarships annually to students in horticulture or landscape-related study fields who live within our Region 4 area.
Our two scholarship winners for 2009 were:
Brittany DeSantis, attending SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry in Syracuse
Scott Gasparini, attending Saint Leo University in Florida
The New York State Fair: The CNYSNLA maintains and spruces up the Court of Honor garden, located at the center of the Horticulture Building at the NYS Fair grounds, for all regions of the NYS Nursery & Landscape Association. We also provide and man the NYS Nursery & Landscape Association education booth in the Horticulture Building during the NYS Fair each year.
Community Tree Program: The CNYSNLAin partnership with the NYS Nursery & Landscape Associationhas donated over 200 trees since this program began in 2000. These trees are donated for community/municipal plantings and to non-profit groups throughout our region by our membership.
Community Service Projects: As a group the CNYSNLA donates plantings and site improvements for local communities and charitable groups. Many of our members individually donate their time, equipment and materials within their own communities.
Some recent group projects include:
Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY - south planting bed was designed in 2007, and planted in 2008
Chadwick Residence in Syracuse, NY – planting design in 2008
Enable House in Baldwinsville, NY - site plan prepared in 2009, and landscaping –planned for 2010
Education Day: Annually we host an educational day designed to update members on current industry research, trade practices, and safety requirements and to provide continuing education credits for certification programs through the NYSDEC and NYSNLA. Our 2010 Trade Show & Education Day is on February 10th at the Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles.
Toys for Tots: For 12 years, our group has participated in the Toys for Tots program by collecting toys at our annual Holiday Membership Luncheon. Toys are donated through News Channel 3.
CNYSNLA Environmental Committee: Wework closely with local universities, extension offices, and our members to bring current scientific research findings and information related to the nursery and landscape trades to the local media and government offices, at county and state levels to benefit the environment around our homes, and workplaces. Most recently, the CNYSNLA has worked with both the Onondaga County Legislature and the Onondaga County Health Department, to provide updated information to the public through our local media.
The Environmental Committee also provides speakers, for public, school or club events, to discuss proper planting, landscape care, proper pest control, and other related subjects.
2009 CNY Blooms Preview Garden Party for Habitat for Humanity. The CNYSNLA collaborated with Syracuse Habitat for Humanity for this event with all proceeds to benefit Habitat for Humanity. In 2009, $12,000 was raised from the event!
